Lake Maggiore is the second one in Italy in terms of surface. Its banks are shared between Switzerland (Canton Ticino) and Italy (provinces of Verbania, Novara and Varese). Lake Maggiore is 80% located in Italian territory and the remaining 20% in Swiss territory. The maximum altitude of the catchment basin is Punta Dufour in the Monte Rosa massif. The maximum depth is about 370 m (in the cryptodepression between Ghiffa and Porto Valtravaglia). The flowery area is the eastern part of the lake while on the west bank we find the renowned localities of Arona, Stresa and Verbania. Between the latter two there is the archipelago of the Borromean Islands: Isola Madre, Isola Bella and Isola Superiore dei Pescatori. Opposite the Swiss town of Brissago there are two Brissago Islands. In front of the coast of Cannero Riviera there are three emerged rocks called Castles of Cannero. Located in the municipality of Leggiuno, on the Lombard shore, there is the Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso, a monastery built on the rocky coast, reachable via the staircase that goes up from the lake or via path descending from the parking lot above. The monastic complex consists of three buildings and dates back to the 14th century, with more recent additions from the 19th century. In more recent times it has undergone restoration, which was completed in 1986. Owned by the Province of Varese, it is entrusted for custody to a community of Dominicans. Located on the Sacro Monte di San Carlo in Arona, the colossus (commonly called Sancarlone) looks like one of the largest statues in the world, reaching more than 35 meters in height. The statue depicts Cardinal San Carlo Borromeo.
